If you are one of the millions of Americans and Canadians who have been laid off in recent years and are struggling to find other means of employment, you know all too well how depressing, aggravating, and embarrassing being unemployed can be. In times like this it is important to keep your head up and keep pressing on, and here are five ways you can keep a positive outlook while you are between jobs and struggling to make ends meet. 
Step 1. Remember that there many going through the same thing.
Millions of Americans have lost their jobs and have been searching for work and have been unemployed for well over three years. While some days are more difficult than other and some days it can be a challenge to get through the challenges, it is important to remember that you are not alone and there are others who now what it is like and can sympathize with your struggles and fears.
Step 2. Don't blame yourself.
It is natural, especially in American society, to take responsibility an assume full fault for all hardships and dilemmas that you face. Even though we want to believe that we are the only ones in charge of what happens to us in life, it's important to remember that some things simply can't be influenced or control by our own might as individual people. If you did do something to warrant being let go, then learn from that and move on and stop blaming yourself and start working towards making it better.
Step 3. Use unemployment to get in shape.
Getting in shape can be more than just losing weight and eating better. Get your entire life in shape by focusing on the important things. Spend time in mediation or prayer. Enjoy the time you have with your family. Use some of your free time now to get training and improve your education in certain areas or subjects. Make the most of the time and get yourself in shapes- mind, body, and spirit. 
Step 4. Keep working on your resume.
One of the hardest parts about the loss of a job and dealing with being unemployed is the feeling that you are not accomplishing anything. A good way to remedy this and to keep yourself motivated and positive is to keep working on your resume. Look for things you can do that will keep you busy, get you involved, and add great points to your resume. Remember that it is not just paid experiences and work that can help boost your resume.
Step 5. Remember, you are not defined by your job.
When someone has been working the same job for a long time and then suddenly lose that job, they can often times feel broken and confused. It is like a part of their very being has been taken away- it is like they have lost their identity and purpose. Remember that you are more than your job title and just because you lose your job that does not mean you have lost your identity or that you are any less of a person than you were before.
It is easier said than done but it's important to stay positive during this tough time in your life. Maintaining a positive outlook and staying motivated when you're unemployed can be very difficult but it can go a long way in helping you get through this trying time and can make it a little easier on your nerve and mental status.
